Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the starting point?
All of our tours begin at the top of the Halifax Citadel Hill, facing the main entrance to the fort. Look for one of our guides on the observation deck overlooking Brunswick street, or if you're running late, you'll find the tour in front of the fort just to the left of the Parks Canada admission kiosk.
Still having trouble? Look us up on Google Maps for the exact location!
How long is the tour?
The exact length of the tour depends on the guide as well as the group size, but we estimate that each tour will take between 1.5-2 hours. Wanting to join in but can't stay for the whole thing? No problem! Just let your guide know when you're taking off. We're still happy to have you along with us for any length of time.
Do you run tours throughout the year?
We aim to continue to run tours as often as we can, but unfortunately the nature of our student-run company is that we all have classes to attend! Once our off-season begins, we are no longer able to guarantee tours at 10am and 3pm every day. By sending us an e-mail or using our contact form, we can try to arrange a tour for your group while you are visiting! We typically are able to run tours on most days throughout September and October, but be warned that passed this time, it starts to get chilly in Halifax! In the winter, we do not run tours, and trust us, you don't want to spend two hours walking around Halifax in February either!
Where can I park downtown?
Good question! If you find somewhere, let us know!
In all seriousness, parking downtown is notoriously bad. Street parking is limited and fills up quickly during the day. Meters are free on weekends, but otherwise require change and can be filled for up to 2 hours. There is some free street parking as well with a limit of two hours. One great option is the Halifax Citadel! If you are planning a visit, their parking lot is located around back and it is only an additional $3.15 on your admissions price to park there for the day, just beware that our tour ends on the waterfront, so you'll have to walk back up the hill to retrieve your car after! Public lots such as MetroPark or the outdoor lots on the waterfront are privately owned and will charge for parking.
who are your guides?
Our guides are all young people - students or recent grads! We are all people who love the city of Halifax and want to share it with visitors. You can find out more about each of us personally on our guides page
Can a private tour be arranged?
Absolutely! We often do private tours for big groups, including conferences or office outings! Shoot us an e-mail to get the ball rolling, and we'll work with you to find a time. We've gotten great feedback in the past from groups who have used our tours as team building activities or fun ways to get out of the convention centre and into the city!
Please note that tour requests in the off-season are not automatically private and where we can, we will combine groups into one tour. If you are specifically seeking a private tour, be sure to include that in your communication with us!
how do I know if a tour is cancelled?
Assume all of our 10am and 3pm daily tours are running, as usual, unless we have said something! If we have to cancel, we will post to our Twitter and our Facebook pages at least an hour before the tour. We aim to give as much notice as possible, but sometimes the weather can be tricky, and in the spirit of cancelling as few tours as possible we wait to see how rainy days play out before we decide to call off a tour.
Occasionally, there will be emergencies which will prevent our guides from getting to their tours, and our small staff makes it difficult to find last-minute replacements. Because we have no office or company phone number, we have no way to warn of these last-minute cancellations than via our social media accounts. We hate this as much as you do, but it's always smart to check our cancellations page before walking to the top of the hill. We are also very responsive on Facebook if you ever need to get in touch last-minute!
Do tours run in the rain?
If it is pouring rain, we will likely cancel, but anything less will probably not stop us! The only thing we really worry about is thunderstorms, and so we will often cancel the tour rather than take the risk of being caught outside with thunder and lightning. This is a safety precaution! Look for weather-related cancellations on our social media platforms or on our cancellations page.
Who pays the guides?
We have no affiliations with the city or the province, nor are we connected with any other tour group, which means that our guides all volunteer their time to do tours during the summer and throughout the year. Our philosophy is that gratuities are very welcome if it is felt that the tour was worthwhile, but otherwise not obligatory. Our guides also do not receive any paid endorsements - so you can be sure our recommendations are genuine!
